Millions of people struggle with dental phobia, and you might be part of that group. Your visits may be a big deal for you, but there are ways you can ease your anxiety. Dental sedation is designed to help you relax. Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are great options to consider. Though, which one is better? Here’s what to know about them to feel confident choosing for yourself.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is breathed in through a mask placed over your nose. It has a faintly sweet smell, but it only takes a few minutes to kick in. Many people experience a floaty or euphoric feeling. This option is the mildest form of dental sedation available, so it’s best for minor procedures, like cleanings.

Better yet, there are often no lingering effects. A few patients might feel nauseous, but it goes away once they stop receiving it. It will take just a few minutes to clear your system, but you’ll be ready to drive yourself home afterward.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation is a prescribed medication taken before your appointment. It’s oftentimes a pill, but you’ll swallow it about an hour before your appointment. After about 15 minutes, it kicks in, and you’ll have a stronger relaxing effect.

This makes it a great option for longer procedures. That said, since it’s more potent, you will need someone to drive you to and from the office. It will take a few hours to clear your system, so it doesn’t hurt to clear your schedule so you can fully relax after your treatment.

Which Type of Dental Sedation Is Right for Me?

Both dental sedation options will keep you conscious. That means you’ll be awake and aware of your surroundings, but it’s possible you’ll doze off on your own. If so, then you can be woken up with a couple of light nudges.

Whether nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation is better for you depends on your anxiety level and type of dental service you’re getting. If it’s a routine checkup, then laughing gas may be the way to go. If you need something more in-depth, like a root canal, then the latter might be better. Thankfully, your dentist can walk you through the options. That way, you feel confident making a choice.
